Asteroid (11764) Benbaillaud

Discovered 1960 Sept. 24 by C. J. van Houten and I. van Houten-Groeneveld on Palomar Schmidt plates taken by T. Gehrels.


Benjamin Baillaud (1848-1934) was a director of the Toulouse (1878-1907) and Paris (1907-1926) observatories. He founded the Pic du Midi Observatory and served as first president of the International Astronomical Union.


Dr. Baillaud was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada at a meeting on 1916-04-27. He is also remembered in the name of the asteroid (1280) Baillauda.
